About Us

What is an RSPB Local Group?

We are supporters who have joined together to combine our enjoyment of birds with a collective aim of helping the RSPB. Our aims are to :-

  • Conserve wild birds and the wider environment on which they depend.
  • Conserve natural and semi-natural habitats and to recreate habitats.
  • Encourage others to practise the conservation of wild birds and habitats.
  • Promote knowledge of conservation through education and research.
  • The RSPB is the UK charity working to secure a healthy environment for birds and wildlife, helping to create a better world for all of us.

    Our Programme

    Field Trips

Please note-dogs are not permitted on Field meetings.

We have an interesting and varied programme enjoying the wildlife in some of Suffolk's diverse habitats from Ancient Woodland to recently created sanctuaries. These habitats include

    Estuaries

Walks along many of the counties beautiful rivers and especially the important estuarine habitats of the Orwell, Stour, Deben Alde, and Blyth Estuary offer the opportunity to see birds feeding on the invertebrate rich mud.
Suffolk estuaries hold such high numbers of certain species such as black tailed godwit, teal, avocet and redshank that they are considered to be of international importance.

    Coast

Only a few minutes drive from the sea we are able to watch the seasonal comings and goings of many of the  migratory birds, resting and refuelling before continuing on their journeys.

Our constantly changing coastline is also an internationally important wildlife habitat consisting of shingle, vegetated shingle, sand dunes and soft cliffs, behind which can be found saltmarsh, reedbeds and coastal grazing.

    Lowland Heaths.

Our annual programme always includes a walk on one of the heaths, known collectively as the Sandlings, in search of Woodlark and to listen for the haunting sound of the churring Nightjars on their arrival from Africa in the Spring

    Coach Trips

We also organise coach trips to other RSPB sites in neighbouring counties

    Mid Week Walks.
