Welcome to the RSPB Ipswich Local Group

The Ipswich local group celebrated its 30th birthday in 2005, with the Local Group membership now higher than at any time in the past thirty years.

Many of the RSPB members in Ipswich and the surrounding villages join to be more involved with the charity's work, better informed, and able to enjoy the programme of talks and walks held throughout the year.

The members range in experience from those who are just starting to enjoy bird watching to those who are experts and have been watching birds for many years.

There is no need to be concerned if you lack knowledge of birds, you will find that the friendly approach of the members will be able to help you to learn. The meetings will open your eyes to the many facets of wild life both in this country and abroad.

What do we do?

We hold outdoor events, excursions, walks and indoor meetings. We publish a regular newsletter, the Orwell Observer.

The Local Area

Red Necked Grebe, Thorington St Reservoir, Oct 1 2005As the county town of Suffolk in the East of England, Ipswich is close to many excellent birding locations. The fabulous RSPB coastal reserve of Minsmere offers year-round birding opportunities. In the immediate area of the town, the Orwell estuary offers excellent viewing, and Alton Water and Felixstowe/Landguard Bird Observatory are only a few miles drive away. Inland, the Wolves Wood reserve preserves a piece of the ancient woodland that once covered the county.

The coast is a rich birding resource - you can check the tides for coastal birding locations here.
