Introductory talk by the RSPB's Steve Lovell; "Wetlands the Way Forward in East Anglia' PLUS Screenings of award winning RSPB films; 'Waterlands' narrated by Tom Conti + 'The Eagle Odyssey' _______________________________________________________________________________________ ‘Waterlands’ _____- Filmed over three years in collaboration with the BBC’s Natural History Unit, the film was awarded Best Independent production at the 2008 International Wildlife Film festival. The audience is treated to a privileged insight into the lives of many thousands of birds, mammals and insects that make their home in the reedbeds, saltmarshes and flower-rich meadows of the UK. From the Somerset Levels to the Lincolnshire Wash, the precious wildlife of some of the UK's rarest habitats - our beautiful wetlands. The film tackles the issues of climate change where rising sea levels threaten many of our coastal wildlife habitats and suggests measures that can be taken to preserve some or our rarest wetland birds such as bitterns and black-tailed godwits. _______________________________________________________________________________________ 'The Eagle Odyssey'___ charts the struggles of the UK's largest breeding bird of prey, the white-tailed eagle. Winner for best script, against worldwide competition, at Wildscreen 2004, the film went on to scoop the Grand Prix Best Film award at the world’s premier ornithological film festival, held each year at Menigoute in France, and two more awards at the Valvert European Wildlife Film Festival in Belgium (most popular film and Best Story). The BBC Natural History Unit was so impressed with the RSPB’s new sea eagle footage that they paid the RSPB to revise the material for a Natural World programme, broadcast on BBC2 and went on to collaborate on the next production ‘Waterlands’, excerpts of which have also been broadcast.
